As Baby's Days handles the Private and Personal Data of the children you care for and also some limited Data of the parents of these children, we are responsible under The Data Protection Act to register with them.

Our registration states that we must comply with a number of important principles set out by them, and these include:

• The data is fairly and lawfully processed.
• The data is processed for limited purposes.
• The data is adequate, relevant and not excessive.
• The data is accurate and up to date.
• The data is not kept for longer than is necessary.
• The data is processed in line with their rights.
• The data is secure.
• The data is not transferred to other countries without adequate protection.

Our software has been designed and developed to ensure it complies fully with all areas of the DPA.

The Data Protection Act does not guarantee personal privacy at all costs, but aims to strike a balance between the rights of individuals and the sometimes competing interests of those with legitimate reasons for using personal information. It applies to some paper records as well as computer records.

The Data Protection Act states that you should be able to answer 'yes' to the following points to be sure you are complying with the Act.

• Do I really need this information about an individual? Do I know what I'm going to use it for?
• Do the people whose information I hold know that I've got it, and are they likely to understand what it will be used for?
• If I'm asked to pass on personal information, would the people about whom I hold information expect me to do this?
• Am I satisfied the information is being held securely?
• Is access to personal information limited to those with a strict need to know?
• Am I sure the personal information is accurate and up to date?
• Do I delete or destroy personal information as soon as I have no further need for it?
